Biography:
Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, briefly assumed the mantle of Batman following the crippling of Bruce Wayne by Bane. His first appearance as Azrael was in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 (October 1992), and he took over as Batman in Batman #491 (March 1993) as part of the "Knightfall" storyline.
Valley, brainwashed and programmed by the Order of St. Dumas, initially augmented Batman's suit with heavily armored components and bladed weapons. His methods became increasingly violent and erratic, straying far from Bruce Wayne's moral code. He redesigned the Batsuit and added weapons.
Ultimately, a recovered Bruce Wayne confronted and defeated Valley, reclaiming the mantle of Batman and forcing Valley to renounce his role as protector of Gotham City. Valley's tenure as Batman is a dark period that illustrated the importance of discipline, control, and adherence to a moral code.
